The Missing Lunchbox Project
Every Friday, the office at Willow School displayed a growing collection of lost lunchboxes, jackets and water bottles. Students often walked past without looking. The school council proposed a digital catalogue with a photograph of every object, expecting students to search it from home. Before spending time building the catalogue, however, council member An suggested finding out why items remained unclaimed. The group agreed to run a small investigation rather than assume that a new website would solve the problem.
For two weeks, volunteers counted the items in the cupboard and interviewed students who came to collect something. They asked where each student had first looked and what had finally helped them find the object. Most interviewees had checked classrooms and the sports field but had not known that lost property was kept in the office. Others knew the location but arrived when the office was closed. Only a few said that recognising their belongings was difficult. These answers suggested that information about place and opening times might matter more than detailed photographs.
The council tested a simpler approach. Clear signs near classroom doors pointed to the office, and teachers announced the collection hours. For one month, the office also opened for fifteen minutes after the final lesson on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This change was intended to help students who could not visit during their lunch break. Each returned object was marked in a notebook, but volunteers did not record the owner's name. The council wanted to compare totals, so personal details were unnecessary for the investigation.
At the end of the month, the cupboard held fewer objects than before. That result was encouraging, but An warned against treating it as proof that every change had worked. The trial had taken place during a dry month, when students brought fewer jackets. Also, new labels on lunchboxes might have helped classmates return them directly without using the office. The volunteers had counted collected items but had not counted every object lost around the school. They therefore could not calculate what proportion of all lost property had been recovered.
A short follow-up survey raised another question. Students who regularly passed the office found the signs useful, while those in the furthest building were less likely to notice them. The council decided to add a notice there and repeat the trial in a wetter month. It would keep the extended collection hours during this second trial because students had specifically said that the extra time helped. It would also count newly received objects separately from collected ones. This would make future comparisons more informative, although some belongings might still be returned outside the office.
The digital catalogue has not been rejected forever. It may be useful later, particularly for objects that are difficult to describe. For now, the council has chosen to improve a process it can maintain with a small volunteer team. An says the most useful lesson was learning to question the first explanation of a problem. A modest change can be worth trying, she adds, but a positive result should lead to better questions as well as celebration.
